CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Carson-Newman women's golf coach Holly Cantwell advanced to the second round of the Tennessee State Amateur Championship Tuesday afternoon with a 5&3 win over Shayla Forsey of Morristown. Also a Morristown native, Cantwell closed out Forsey on hole No. 14 at The Honors Course. She will now advance to take on Beth Felts (Chattanooga, Tenn.) tomorrow at 8:40 a.m. The Tennessee Women's State Amateur began Monday with an 18-hole, stroke play qualifying round. Cantwell carded a seven-over, 79 to tie for 22nd, which made her the 26th seed in the 32-woman match play championship bracket. The former University of Tennessee standout has twice finished runner- up (2002 and 2006) in the Women's State Amateur. Carson-Newman Athletic Director David Barger announced in December that Cantwell will be the coach of the inaugural Lady Eagle golf team in 2008-`09. Sarah Jane Sinard (White Pine, Tenn.), who will be a member of that first-ever squad, is also competing in the Women's State Amateur this week. Sinard shot a four-over, 76 in qualifying to earn the 14th seed, before being upset in her opening match by No. 19 Jessica Tarbet (Corryton, Tenn.), 2&1.
