2006 SEASON RECAP

The 2006-2007 Carson-Newman Lady Eagle basketball team advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the fourth time since they began competing at the NCAA Division II level in 1993.

Under head coach Dean Walsh, the Lady Eagles compiled a 21-10 record and earned the fourth seed in the South Atlantic Conference tournament. After beginning the season with exhibitions against Division I powerhouses Tennessee and North Carolina, the Lady Eagles won nine of their first 10 regular season games. When conference play began in January, Carson-Newman continued their winning ways with six wins in their first seven SAC games, including a 56-54 victory over nationally ranked Wingate in North Carolina and an 81-79 win over Lenoir-Rhyne where junior Stephanie Holbrook scored 28 points and made six three pointers, one short of the C-N record set by Kandi Duncan against L-R on February 10, 1999.

In the SAC Tournament, the Eagles defeated Lenoir-Rhyne in Holt Fieldhouse and upset top-seeded Wingate in the semifinals behind freshman Shari Buford's 14 points and 13 rebounds. Buford and freshman teammate Casha Foster were named to the SAC's All-Freshman team.

Holbrook and Buford led the Lady Eagles in scoring. Holbrook averaged 10.7 points per game while Buford added 10.4 points per contest. Guard Ashley Tipton added 8.4 points per game and was Carson-Newman's most accurate free throw shooter at 84%. Buford's 9.3 rebounds per game led the team while guard Ashley Kyle provided a spark off the bench with 5.3 points per game and 89 assists. Along with returning players Abby Evans, Catelyn Dake, Maria Niarchos, Angela Volentine, and Emily Mason, the Lady Eagles will vie for another NCAA Tournament run in the 2007-2008 season.
