The Carson-Newman Eagles finished the 2007 season with a 36-20 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II South Regional tournament in Tampa, Florida. Under second-year head coach Tom Griffin, the Eagles began South Atlantic Conference play with wins in seven of their first eight conference games, including a three-game home sweep of Newberry. The Eagles then took two of three games in SAC series against Presbyterian and Wingate to earn the second seed heading into the South Atlantic Conference Tournament. After wins over Newberry and Wingate, C-N fell to top seed Tusculum for their first loss in the double elimination tournament. However, the Eagles rallied to defeat Wingate once and Tusculum twice on April 22 to win the SAC Tournament title. The second C-N/Tusculum game was a marathon affair that lasted three hours and 57 minutes, the longest game in SAC Tournament history and the sixth-longest game in the league.
Carson-Newman pitchers Matt Teague and Cole Draughn, along with third baseman Nick Achberger, earned second team All-South Atlantic Conference honors. Carson-Newman centerfielder Brandon Burchfield received first team Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America and ESPN the Magazine. He was also named the 2007 South Atlantic Conference's Scholar Athlete for baseball and one of three Eagle Club Academic Athletes of the Year. Teague took second team honors on the Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association All-South Region team. The senior from Belmont, North Carolina led the Eagles with a 7-2 record and 74 strikeouts in 14 starts. He walked just 16 batters all season and held opposing hitters to a .255 batting average. |
